Information available to peacefmonline.com indicates that only one person died in the gory accident which occurred at Offinso on the Kumasi-Afrancho highway in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday morning. This is contrary to the earlier report filed by Sampson Nyamekye, a Senior Reporter of HelloFm (quoting eyewitnesses account), that 16 might be feared dead in the accident. The police claim only one person has been confirmed dead as of now. The deceased, according to the police, happens to be the pregnant woman who was walking by the roadside and was run over by one of the accident vehicles. The accident involved three cars; a Hyundai mini bus heading from Kumasi, a tipper truck filled with sand and a taxi cab. The registration numbers of the accident vehicles were given as tipper truck, GR 7872 V; Mini bus, AS 3216-10 and Opel Astra taxicab, AS 4798 U. One of the survivors; the driver of the taxi cab that was involved in the accident, narrated what happened. “I had parked by the road side checking my tyre pressure when I saw the Hyundai bus attempting to cross the tipper truck (from the Kumasi end of the road) and so I quickly sat in the car to leave the scene. However, the two vehicles veered off the road, run over the pregnant woman and slammed into my car...I got stuck (in the process)...,” he recounted. According to him, he was assisted by two gentlemen who pulled him out of his car to safety. Eleven injured persons have so far been sent to the Family Care Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.
