The Education Ministry is optimistic that striking GNAT and NAGRAT members will go back to the classroom by close of next week. The Ministry on Friday met the two teacher unions in a bid to meet some of their demands.
Speaking to Citi News, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Education, Paul Krampah said a communiqué issued after the meeting indicated that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“From the communiqué that was issued, they said they have agreed with all the issues and have realized there is progress. Because it was a collective decision so they will get back to their constituents, meet them and give us feedback by the close of Monday.”

The teachers have refused to call off their strike which entered into day five on Friday despite several appeals for them to do so. The NLC on Wednesday directed the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and teacher unions to return to the negotiation table to resolve any issues which have prompted the strike by teachers.

It also directed the teachers to return to the classroom as the negotiation is ongoing.

“Even though the National Labor Commission (NLC) has ruled that striking teachers should start negotiation with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and revert to the Commission in seven days, the leadership of the teaching bodies said they are yet to be invited for the negotiations by the fair wages.”
