Senior Lecturer advocates four-year SHS system

A Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Richard Amoako Baah, has called on government to revert the education system from the current three-year senior high school system to a four-year system in order to churn out the best students.

He argued that the four-year SHS system affords a graduate an opportunity to fit into the job market even if he or she does not continue to  the tertiary level.

Speaking on TV3’s Sunrise in an interview on Wednesday, Dr Baah noted that it will be difficult at the beginning to institute a four-year system because of lack of resources but when government commits to it, it will be completed.

He bemoaned the quality of teachers in the country, saying  brilliant students end up going to the university and pursuing other courses while the relatively poor ones end up in the training college to become teachers.

“Now that the teachers’ pay is higher, maybe teacher training colleges must lower their grade admission,” he recommended.

He observed that students now learn for examination purposes and that has even been worsened by cheating, he notes.

This does not augur well for the future of the country, Dr Baah says.

“It is up to the Ghana Education Service to come down hard,” he told presenter Gabriel Bosompem.

He advocated that every graduate from tertiary institutions is made to take up teaching for the national service in order to inculcate the idea of teaching in students.
